The History of Relations between the Maldives and the United Arab Emirates

 

The Maldives and the United Arab Emirates have enjoyed a long-standing and friendly relationship, built on mutual trust, shared values and common adherence to Islam. The two countries have been reliable partners and brotherly nations, supporting socioeconomic and cultural ties.

 

Early Years (1978-2012)

The Maldives and the UAE established diplomatic relations on March 15, 1978. The relationship was marked by regular high-level exchanges, with visits from government officials, business delegations and cultural ambassadors. During this period, the two countries maintained a strong sense of friendship and cooperation.

 

Strengthening Ties (2012-2017)

In 2012, the first Maldivian Ambassador to the UAE was appointed, marking a significant milestone in the history of relations between the two countries. This appointment was followed by the establishment of a resident Ambassador to the UAE in 2017. The Maldives Embassy in the UAE actively promoted economic cooperation between the two countries, particularly in areas such as trade, tourism and investment.

 

Economic Cooperation (2017-Present)

The Maldives and UAE have signed several agreements and memorandums of understanding to strengthen economic cooperation. These agreements have facilitated trade and investments between the two countries. The UAE has provided significant development assistance to the Maldives, including loans and grants for various projects such as airport expansion, telecommunications development and housing and infrastructure projects.

 

Trade and Investment Relations (2011-Present)

The Maldives and UAE have a strong trade and investment relationship, with significant foreign investment from the UAE contributing to the development of key sectors such as tourism, hospitality and real estate. The number of tourists from the UAE to the Maldives has experienced a significant surge over the past decade, with a 513.3% increase from 2011 to 2021. The UAE has also become the primary transit hub for tourists traveling to the Maldives.

 

High-Level Engagements (2021-2023)

Recent high-level engagements include official visits by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to the UAE in 2023, a ministerial delegation from the Maldives to the UAE in 2021 and a ministerial delegation from the UAE to the Maldives in 2022. These engagements have further strengthened the bond between the two countries.

 

Establishment of the Embassy of UAE in Maldives (2019)

The UAE established its Embassy in the Maldives in 2019, with H.E. Dr. Saeed Muhammad Al Shamsi presenting his credentials as Ambassador to the Maldives on March 25, 2019. The Embassy has played a vital role in promoting economic cooperation, cultural exchanges and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
