Ambassador 

 

At the onset of the President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s Government, His Excellency Mohamed Hussain Shareef was appointed as Ambassador-at-Large at ministerial rank. He presented his credentials to President His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan, as the Ambassador of Maldives to the UAE, on 14th June 2024.

Ambassador Shareef, better known locally as Mundhu, joined the Government in 1999, and a distinguished record of service at the highest levels of government include holding the post of Cabinet Minister of Human Resources, Youth and Sports (2012-2013) and Minister at the President's Office (2013-2015).

He had also served as the Maldives’ Ambassador to Japan (2016-2017) and Sri Lanka (2017-2018), with non-resident postings to South Korea, North Korea, the Philippines and Russia. All were at the rank of Minister.

His Excellency Mohamed Hussain Shareef holds a BA (Hons.) in Economics and Politics from the University of Warwick, UK, and an MA in Environmental Politics from Keele University, UK. He did his MPhil postgraduate research at the University of Warwick, UK, in diplomacy and international relations in small states.

In his early career, Ambassador Shareef served as the Chief Government Spokesman (2005-2007) and Presidential Spokesperson (2017-2018). He had also undertaken the responsibilities of President of the Executive Board of the World Health Organisation (2015) and President of the Colombo Plan (2018), respectively. He also served as Speech Draftsman for successive Presidents.

In a 12-year career at the President's Office, he held numerous positions., including leading the environment unit, development affairs section, press unit, presidential protocol section, foreign relations section, cabinet affairs section and strategic communications unit.

A senior politician in Maldives, His Excellency Mohamed Hussain Shareef is the elected Vice President of the ruling political party, People's National Congress (PNC). He has been serving in the capacity since the inauguration of the party in 2019. He had earlier served as Council Member of both the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) (2011-2019) and Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) (2006-201).

He is the Lead Author of President Dr. Muizzu's presidential manifesto and a noted orator, linguist and academic. Having served in top ranking posts in four administrations spanning nearly 25 years, he is among the most respected veteran politicians in Maldives.

Enthusiastic about sports and youth empowerment, His Excellency Shareef is the founder and chairman of one of the most successful sports franchises in the Maldives – Kings Basketball Club.

Ambassador Shareef has one son and identifies advocating for the rights of the Palestinian people and empowerment of Maldivian youth as his passions. He has been residing in the UAE since 2021 and assumed the responsibility of heading the Maldives Embassy in Abu Dhabi in December 2023.
